Boston College beats Virginia, and Butler is a dadgum cheap-shot artist

I was not a big fan of Boston College’s move from the Big East to the Atlantic Coast Conference. It was an upgrade, to be sure: BC used to have no shot at winning their conference and now it has no shot at winning a significantly better conference. Nonetheless, the move seemed a bit tawdry and hubristic, like a Baptist joining a Methodist congregation (that’s a joke).

While I rooted hard for the Eagles in their ACC opener against Florida State University, and cheered after they beat Clemson for their first ACC victory, I didn’t really feel all that excited about it.

Well, all that changed today, with Virginia Cavaliers Bill Butler’s unbelievable cheap shot at Eagles’ stand out defensive lineman Mathias Kiwanuka. From the moment I saw it, I was in on the ACC fun. Suddenly, it became very important to me for the Eagles to win. I badly wanted them to win and I can’t wait for the rematch, when we go down to Crapville and beat the Cavs on their hillbilly redneck home turf. Maybe we’ll free some slaves and burn some plantations while we’re at it. In return we’ll introduce Virginia to electricity and running water.

So maybe I’m overreacting a bit, but you would have, too, had you seen the hit. Kiwi was already limping around when Butler went straight for his knee after the whistle had blown and they were both well away from the ball. It was a disgusting cheap shot. Unfortunately, Butler scored a triple with it. Not only did he get away with hitting Kiwi, since refree Jebediah Noeyes somehow missed the hit, but then one of Kiwi’s fellow starters pounced on Butler, drawing a flag and an ejection. Later in the game Kiwi drew an ejection of his own when he put his right hand in Butler’s already ugly mug. Actually, he did one better by driving a third Eagle defensive lineman so batty he drew a late hit penalty, thereby keeping a stalling Cavs drive alive.

No matter, in the end Boston College was simply a better and more physical team that handily defeated Cavs 28 - 17, in spite of missing three field goals.

It was a sweet, sweet victory.

GO EAGLES!

Addendum: Cry, Cavs, cry:

“We had a lot of opportunities and opportunities you need to capitalize on,” [Virginia runningback Wali] Lundy said. “You don’t capitalize on opportunities, what’s the point of having them?”

The Boston Globe refers to Butler as “Brad”, but Cavs call him “Bill” so I’ll stick with that. Butler was called for a personal foul on his cheap shot. I guess I’m Jebediah Noeyes.
