Another day of murderous confusion in the Boston Globe

So, really, how many people were murdered in Boston in 2005 and 2006, respectively? The Boston Police Department says 73 and 75. The Boston Globe insists on 75 and 74. Today’s installment is from an article by Suzanne Smalley on the possibility of Boston buying an acoustic gunshot-detection system for $1.5 million:

Boston finished last year with 74 homicides, 54 from gunshot wounds. The figure for 2005 was 75 slayings, a 10-year high, 51 of them with a firearm.
