Don’t think of it as a schedule, think of it as a piece of paper with some ink on it

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

Here’s a funny little tidbit from the latest issue of Bostonia, Boston University’s alumni magzine, in which a student from Germany is interviewed: Q. What was the hardest thing about adapting to life in the United States? A. The language and the culture. It was culture shock. People behave differently. In Germany, you have schedules [...]

A not so great moment in marketing communication

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

Last week the New England Patriots announced something called the Fan Outreach Program. I think it’s a newsletter. Or several newsletters. Or something. Judge for yourself.

Dial P for saves

Sunday, April 8th, 2007

After all these years I still don’t understand a dadgum thing about baseball but those pitcher-matchup duels in tight games are darn exciting. Watching Boston Red Sox closer Jon Papelbon cut down the Texas Rangers’ comeback attempt tonight was spectacular sports entertainment. 15 pitches, 5 outs, lights out. Sweet.

All your yen will belong to us (plus Popeyes opens up shop in Kenmore Square)

Sunday, April 8th, 2007

It’s a mutual love affair in Kenmore Square and around Fenway Park: Hordes of Japanese tourists are expected to descend on the Boston Red Sox ballpark throughout the season to worship ace pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka (or Matsuball, as I prefer to call him while the rest of the English-speaking world has opted for the oh-so-contemporary-and-enormously-imaginative [...]

I rank tight-end David Thomas’s catch ever so slightly ahead of runningback Kevin Faulk’s, with the difference being that Thomas [...]

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Boston is the 36th best city in the world to live in. At least out of the 50 cities that were ranked by Mercer Human Resources Consulting. Stockholm, the city I almost grew up in, is ranked 20th. Zurich is number 1.

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

Marketing Sherpa has a case-study on how the Boston Globe increased subscriptions to its digital edition by 145%. Short story: They marketed it to snow-birds and New Englanders outside of the Globe‘s daily circulation area.

The Chinatown vote

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Adam Smith writes about Chinatown voters in the latest issue of Sampan: Though Chinatown’s voter turnout has dramatically increased over the past two decades, the neighborhood is quickly emerging as a neighborhood with two distinct populations: the traditional Chinatown residents, many of whom are Chinese who live in subsidized or low-cost housing, and new Chinatown [...]

Gitell on the Barbara Walters Giuliani interview

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

As I read Seth Gitell’s post on Barabar Walters’s interview with the Giulianis I fully expected him to praise Boston’s Mayor Thomas Menino at some point, and he came through for me, as I knew he would. Here are excerpts of what Mr. Gitell has to say about the interview as it relates to the [...]
