The annual circus where Cape Cod businesses refuse to hire Hub teens
Two stories that pop up every summer: Boston teens complaining about a lack of summer jobs and Cape Cod business owners complaining about a lack of visas for their foreign workers during the busy summer season.
Business owners on the Cape usually reject domestic labor on the rationale that school ends after the season has begun and starts before it ends, which is why they need thousands of foreigners to staff hotels and restaurants while thousands of Hub teens remain idle or engaged in workfare programs.
I think the real issue is that Cape employers view Hub teens as more or less unemployable. And perhaps Hub teens are unwilling to trek to the Cape.
