Boston’s population just shy of 600,000 in 2007

The United States Census Bureau has released its population estimates for cities and other so-called subcounty areas.

According to the estimate the 2007 population in Boston was 599,351, 3,653 more than the revised estimate for 2006, and a full 8,588 more than the original estimate for 2006, and 10,210 more than the 2000 population count, which pegged the city’s population at 589,141.

I’m surprised, I was pretty confident that Boston would top 600,000 by a few hundred to a couple of thousand people.

It is the Census Bureau’s contention that the cities and towns in Suffolk county outside of Boston have increased their population by about 13,000 since 2000, while Boston’s has grown by 11,000 people. The county had 689,807 residents in 2000, and 713,049 in 2007.

The City of Boston is likely to appeal the estimate for 2007, as it successfully did for 2005 and 2006.
