The suspense mounts

Barack Obama’s victory speech certainly didn’t give any hints about what policies he will pursue as President of the United States of America.

I don’t know about you but I thought the potential power of the moment was weakened by the fact that he’s been almost a shoo-in to win ever since he got a commanding lead against Hillary Clinton. In fact, I think it’s almost amazing that Senator John McCain got 46% or 47% of the vote.

As for the outright naive enthusiasm of Obama’s supporters, well, I guess every generation must have it. I guess mine was from when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 to 1992, the Year of Europe or whatever they called it. After that, deep seated disillusion set in fairly quickly. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if something similar happens to the Obama crowd. On the other hand, Baby Boomers never lost their naive super-inflated sense of self-worth and importance, so I guess nothing is inevitable, nothing is given. Speaking of Boomers, does Obama’s victory bring them what they covet the most, namely… closure?

[Wednesday morning update: Yeah, I'd say some measure of disappointment will set in down the road.]
