New England Patriots Lost Drafts of 2006-2008
When New England Patriots traded runningback and 2006 first round draft pick Laurence Maroney to the Denver Broncos on September 14 it marked the end of a spectaluarly failed era of drafting for the team.
The 2006 through 2008 drafts produced only three notable players for the Patriots: Kicker Stephen Gostkowski, starting inside linebacker Jerod Mayo (who may yet prove to be more solid than extraordinary) and borderline starting caliber safety Brandon Meriweather. Of all the other players drafted it is probably only defensive end Le Kevin Smith who was good value. He was a sixth-round draft pick and played in 31 games over three seasons for the team and was a good back up.
Below is the current status (as of today, September 15, according to NFL.com) of the players drafted by the New England in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
