Best Streak Ever

Try this one on for size: The New England Patriots have set a new mark for excellence in the National Football League. By defeating the now lowly Miami Dolphins 24-10 in a sloppy game with weird twists, the Patriots completed their quest for 19 consecutive victories,a feat never before accomplished.

Twists, you ask, what twists? Well, there was Miami’s kick returner Wes Welker not only returning kicks but also kicking the ball, including an extra point and a field goal. Welker had to pull double-duty after the team’s regular kicker strained a calf, or something similarly kickerish (hey, Phish, call Ola Kimrin). One of Welker’s kick-offs was fair-caught by defensive lineman turned linebacker Dan Klecko.

The oddball play of the game was delivered by Miami’s punter who took it upon himself to scramble in an attempt to get a first down. That didn’t work, paving the way for one of Patriots’ touchdowns.

Another example of how the Dolphins insist on shooting themselves in the foot came late in the game after Miami had advanced the ball to New England’s one-yard line. That prime opportunity to cut the home team’s lead was promptly squandered when the Dolphins tried to throw the ball - only to see their quarterback sacked at the 12 yard line. All together now: LOSERS!

Next up for the 4-0 Patriots: Seattle Seahawks. For the 0-5 Dolphins: Dr. Melfi.
