Metropolitan Boston’s population grew 0.4% from 2000-2005
Metropolitan Boston’s population grew by 19,495 from 2000 to 2005, according to population estimates by the United States Census Bureau released last Friday, from 4,391,344 to 4,411,835. The 2005 figure is, however, some 14,000 less than the 2002 population estimate. It’s also about 7,000 less than the 2004 estimate.
The natural increase in population was 115,563 (births minus deaths). 132,759 (net) people immigrated to Metropolitan Boston from abroad while 223,017 (net) left the area for other parts of America.
The Census Bureau ranks Boston (officially Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, MA-NH) as America’s 11th largest Metropolitan Area, down from 10th in 2000. Back then Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta was number 11. It is now number 9. Number 10 is now inhabited by skid-row Detroit-Warren-Livonia. Sandusky, OH, remains at 355.
