WRKO hires Tom Finneran, dumps Scott Allen Miller
The strange, fitful transformation of Boston AM-station 680 WRKO took another turn today when the Entercom-owned station announced Tom Finneran as its new morning drivetime talk show host. The current early AM host, Scott Allen Miller, has been dumped and will likely leave the station altogether in the near future, possibly for a gig at a different Entercom station [Update: I think I misunderstood the reshuffle. It seems Mr. Miller will be out cold from February 12, rather than taking over a listener-less daytime slot]. Howie Carr, the station’s by far biggest star, spent the bulk of his show today voicing his displeasure with the hiring of Mr. Finneran and plenty of listeners agreed with him. It got so bad that Mr. Carr repeatedly had to try dissuade irate listeners from launching boycotts of the station’s advertisers.
Judging from this interview, Mr. Finneran doesn’t appear to be chock full of interesting ideas or provocative thoughts. I guess his listeners will find out.
WRKO’s programming woes will largely come to an end in a few months when the baseball season begins and the station debuts its broadcasting of Boston Red Sox games.
