Boston in 2009: older, whiter and harder working

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Realtor and real estate writer John Keith has an interesting blog post on BostonHerald.com where he compares Boston’s population by age group in 2000 and 2008/2009 (data methodology issue: as Keith points out the American Community Survey is an annual survey of a sample of the population whereas the the 2000 data is from a [...]

Baked French Toast at Nashoba Brook Bakery

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Yesterday we had breakfast at Nashoba Brook Bakery in Concord on our way to Honey Pot Hill apple orchards in Stow. I tried the baked French toast, which my wife refers to as the baked French banana toast. It’s OK, but not on par with the very good loaves of bread the bakery churns out.

Car burns up on Massachusetts Turnpike / I-90

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

While driving eastbound on the Mass Turnpike on Saturday August 21 we were passed by a Natick firetruck in the right lane. It turned out to be racing towards a car on fire in the westbound lane, more or less halfway between the Weston barracks and the Framingham exit. When we passed the scene, maybe [...]

We were first alerted that something was going on when a couple of unmarked State police cruisers came flying down the left lane (where they were naturally slowed down by Massholes who [...]

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

What was Boston’s population in 2005? That depends on when you asked the question. Last week the United States Census Bureau released its latest population estimate for cities and towns with at least 100,000 people. The estimate for Boston was 645,000, crowning a rather spectacular turnaround for the estimate of the city’s population size. The [...]

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

The City of Boston wants more money from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In a report released on April 21 the city argues that it should get more state aid because: 1) Its share of the state’s population (9.5%, according to the report) exceeds its share “net state aid” (8.4%). 2) Its share of the state’s [...]

Boston’s childless population growth?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

An interesting nugget from the student poverty rate for school districts in Massachusetts that I posted yesterday: Boston’s 2008 population is listed as 625,000, about 12,000-16,000 more than the usual Federal population estimates for the city, and about 35,000 more than in 2000, yet less than the 630,000 that City Hall claims in a challenge [...]
